GAP ANALYSIS

Providing Gap Analysis Services to get you going to resolve the wastes in your value stream

A Gap Analysis is a facilitated Lean workshop in which a team spends time at the gemba of a value stream to observe first hand and discover the wastes and issues found there. These are the problem and challenges found in the value stream. The team then goes on to develop a detailed value stream map capturing all these issues and wastes in the value stream. There are many possible examples of these, some of them could include workplace layout issues, inordinately long waiting times, batch sizes, lots of expediting, unbalance workloads etc. Prioritization of these wastes and issues often follow as the next step. The deliverable of a Gap Analysis is a prioritized list of wastes and issues in the targeted value stream. This is then followed by the identification of counter-measures and implementation of these counter-measures.

What is Lean Gap Analysis?

This article explains what a Gap Analysis is. it may be viewed from two main perspectives. A Gap Analysis is firstly a comparison of an operation against another of world-class standards to spot the differences. The second perspective of a gap analysis is to examine a value stream in detail by performing Go Sees to look for weaknesses or gaps in the value stream and then to prioritize these weaknesses so that action may be taken to close these gaps.

The Kata of Karate

The word 'karate' comes from the word 'kata'. Kata can be thought of as a practiced routine set of actions that one has internalised, which become a habit, almost an unconscious way of doing things. Toyota kata is hence an internalised routine method of learning from trials, making adjustments that are necessary, and implementing the next improvement in moving from the current condition towards a target condition. It is the real Plan Do Check Act (PDCA) actions that allow us to continuously improve.

Lean IT: What is it?

I will begin by referring to the many tools & techniques of Lean. In Lean (whether Lean IT or Lean used in other functions/industries) there are many tools and techniques. Broadly these tools & technqiues can be categorized into 5 main groups, for Problem Solving, Improving Process Flow, Direction Management, Daily Management and Building Continuous Improvement Culture
